Frequently asked questions

How long does the clay last?
Unopened, it keeps for up to 6 months in its original packaging. Once opened, wrap it tightly in cling film and store any leftover clay in an airtight container. If it starts to dry out, spray it with a little water and seal it up to let it rehydrate slowly.
How long does it take to dry?
Usually 24 to 48 hours, depending on how thick your piece is and how warm your home is. It's fully dry when it turns completely white. The clay shrinks slightly as it dries, so let it dry naturally rather than using the sun or a hairdryer, which can cause cracks. If your home is particularly warm, dry it somewhere cooler, or cover it loosely with plastic to slow it down.
How do I use air-dry clay?
Cut or tear off a chunk of clay and knead it for a minute to warm it up, which makes it softer and easier to shape. It stays workable for a good while, so there's no need to rush.
Is air-dry clay waterproof?
No, and it isn't food safe either. A coat of the varnish makes it water resistant, which is great for plant pots that might get damp. For planters, keep the plant in its own plastic pot and lift it out to water. Vases work well with dried flowers, and pots make great pen holders.
Do I need a kiln?
No. Air-dry clay hardens by itself at home in 24 to 48 hours, no firing needed. If you'd like a tougher finish, ask a local pottery studio whether they can fire it for you.
What can I make?
Anything from vases, planters and jewellery dishes to sculptures and wall hangings. Combine your pieces with the paints to match your home or style. Our step-by-step tutorials show you the basic techniques and some projects to get started.
Is the kit suitable for children and during pregnancy?
Our clay and paints are non-toxic and safe for children and during pregnancy. Don't eat the clay, and avoid breathing in any clay dust. The kit is suitable for children over 3 with an adult supervising throughout, as it's not a toy. Take extra care with the tools; we recommend removing the metal needle tool when crafting with children.
Do you do gift wrapping?
Yes. We offer handwritten cards and gift wrapping options on all of our kits. Add your kit to the cart and click "Make it a gift" to choose your wrapping and write your message.
