Decorating your clay creations can turn even an old lump of clay into a jaw-dropping showpiece. So no matter what project you’re working on, have a go at using these decorating techniques & get ready to stun, and be stunned with your masterpiece!

1. Painting

Whether you paint patterns, splatter, or use the acrylic-pouring technique, paint is a great way to add both colour and a protective, water-resistant coat to your pottery piece. So, pick up your brush, channel your inner Michelangelo, and create a masterpiece.

2. Carving

The loop tool and ribbon cutter are built for this, you can carve all sorts of patterns into your piece to add some decorative texture. Remember to allow your piece to dry for a few hours for cleaner cuts while carving.

3. Imprinting

You can press anything from flowers, leaves and shells into your clay to add both texture and a design into your incense burner with ease. Use a rolling pin or heavy book to apply even pressure while imprinting your clay.

4. Marble Effect

Make the most of the terracotta and white clay by mixing the two together! Add clumps of each clay together, then roll into a thick coil and fold it over once or twice until you’re happy with the amount of marbling. Once your piece is mostly dry, use the loop tool to scrape off the outer layer to reveal the marble effect.

5. Make it Novel

One of the perks of pottery is that you can fully customise your piece, so why not create a novelty piece to your taste. You can add arms, feet and a face to a pot to make your favourite character, or model something that resembles your pet!
